Your Favorite Indonesian Food is the theme for this week for English Friday. Honestly I can not make up my mind what kind of dish to write here, because of the big variety in Indonesian food, and I love them all. Finaly I choose Lontong Sayur.
Lontong Sayur of course consists of lontong (rice cake rolled in banana leaf or coconut leaf and boiled) and Sayur Lodeh, vegetables in coconut milk soup. My favorite lontong sayur is Lontong Cap Go Meh
Lontong Cap Go Meh is the mixture of some dishes, besides lontong and sayur lodeh, it also consists of chicken in coconut milk (opor ayam), sambal goreng ati, telur pindang, soya powder, sambal and kerupuk. Lontong Cap Go Meh is an acculturation of Indonesian and Chinese food. It is usually served in a Cap Go Meh celebration in Java, 15 days after the Chinese New Year. But nowadays you can find it anytime of the year
Another Lontong from East Java is Lontong Balap. Not like other lontong, Lontong Balap does not used coconut milk, the only vegetable in its ingredients is tauge (bean sprout). The other are lentho , fried tofu and sate kerang..
From the island of Sumatra I present you Lontong Sayur Medan. This is usually on our table to celebrate Idul Fitri. We usually added rendang, opor ayam, and tauco udang to lontong and sayur lodeh.
These are the ingredients of homemade Sayur Lodeh that I usually cook for week end breakfast. I milled red chilli, onion, garlic, turmeric, candlenut and dried ebi. The powder then added to boiling coconut milk. Then put the bayleaf, lemongrass, galangal rhizome, tomato and the vegetables (such as long beans and squash)
